Operational Unit

The Operational Unit of the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) is hosted by the Department of Health Sciences and Health Policy at the University of Lucerne. The Operational Unit coordinates the activities and programs of the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS). This includes, among others, the coordination of the Calls for Evidence Syntheses, Policy Briefs and Stakeholder Dialogues, the organization of PhD courses and the coordination of the development of the health information management tools. The Operational Unit further monitors and evaluates the overall project outcomes.

Prof. Gerold Stucki

Prof. Gerold Stucki

Gerold Stucki is Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Sciences and Health Policy at the University of Lucerne and Director of Swiss Paraplegic Research in Nottwil, Switzerland. He is also the Director of the ICF Research Branch, a cooperation partner within the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Family of International Classifications in Germany (at DIMDI), at Swiss Paraplegic Research Nottwil. He received his medical education at the University of Berne, Switzerland, and obtained a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard School of Public Health and a diploma in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from the University of McGill, Montréal, Canada. In 2012, Prof. Stucki received the honour of becoming a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Medicine, a part of the United States National Academies whose mission is to serve as adviser to the nation to improve health by consulting on issues relating to biomedical science, medicine, and health.


Prof. Stefan Boes

Prof. Stefan Boes

Stefan Boes is a Professor of Health Economics at the Department of Health Sciences and Health Policy and Director of the Center for Health, Policy and Economics (CHPE) at the University of Lucerne. Before coming to Lucerne, he was an Assistant Professor of Econometrics at the University of Bern and a Lecturer in Statistics and Econometrics at the University of Zurich. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Zurich and a MSc in Economics from the University of Konstanz. During two post-doc fellowships, he visited the IQSS at Harvard University (2009/2010) and the economics departments at Princeton University (2010) and the MIT (2012).


Mirjam Brach, MBA, MPH

Mirjam Brach, MBA, MPH

Mirjam Brach has been the Administrative Director of Swiss Paraplegic Research since January 2006. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Swiss Paraplegic Group Pension Fund. Before starting at SPF, Mirjam Brach held several clinical, teaching and management positions in Germany. She is a registered nurse; from 1982 until 1998 she worked in various fields of nursing, during which time she gained clinical experience in cardiology, abdominal surgery and traumatology. After many years as a clinical practitioner, Mirjam Brach focused more on research and management. In 1998 and 1999 she worked as a Research Fellow at the Bavarian Public Health Research Institute at the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich, Germany and from 1999 until 2005 as a Clinic Manager and Research Leader in in rehabilitation economics in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the former Institute of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at LMU. Mirjam Brach has served as a lecturer on the topics of health policy, health economics and health administration including in the Medical Faculty of LMU, at the Bavarian Academy for Nursing, in Gauting, Germany, within the Master Program in Physiotherapy Sciences at University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland and within the Master Program in Health Sciences at the University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology in Innsbruck, Austria.

Sarah Mantwill is a coordinator in the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) and a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Health Sciences & Health Policy.
She is responsible for the day-to-day activities of SLHS, including scientific project reporting, monitoring and evaluation of project outcomes and the coordination of the PhD scholarship program.
Sarah holds a PhD in Communication Sciences with a focus on Health Communication from the University of Lugano, Switzerland. Prior to joining the Department of Health Sciences & Health Policy, she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston (2016-2017).
She also holds a MSc in Communication and Economics from the University of Lugano and a BA in East Asian Economics and Politics from the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany.

Tanya Kasper Wicki is a coordinator in the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) at the Department of Health Sciences & Health Policy. She is responsible for the day-to-day activities of SLHS, including scientific project reporting, monitoring and evaluation of project outcomes and the coordination of the PhD scholarship program.
Tanya holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Basel and a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Geneva. She also did further trainings in the area of communication, project management and education.
Prior to joining the Department of Health Sciences & Health Policy, she worked in applied research and project management in the areas of disease and accident prevention for the federal administration, for an NGO and an insurance company in Switzerland.
