Promoting the Sustainability of Suicide Prevention Projects in Switzerland

Suicide prevention should be a sustainable public health priority. However, many project-based initiatives struggle to transition into routine care after their initial funding period. Our analysis identifies key facilitators and barriers to the sustainability of suicide prevention projects in Switzerland. Based on a literature review, expert interviews, and evaluation research, we found that long-term impact is often hindered by limited evaluation, fragmented collaboration, short-term financing models, and insufficient institutional anchoring. To address these challenges, four policy actions are recommended:

  1. establish a national suicide prevention website,
  2. promote multi-level collaboration,
  3. ensure systematic involvement of target groups throughout the project lifecycle, and
  4. focus on sustainable funding mechanisms.

These measures aim to facilitate the integration of effective project components into routine care and strengthen suicide prevention in Switzerland.
