14th - 15th November 2019: 3rd SLHS Annual Meeting

The third Annual Meeting of the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) took place in 2019 on November 14th & 15th at the University of Lucerne.

The meeting was open to all members of the SLHS.

26 - 31 August 2019: SSPH+ Lugano Summer School in Public Health Policy, Economics and Management 2019

At the Lugano Summer School public health professionals, researchers and graduate students have the possibility to learn together through mutual exchange, in a stimulating and beautiful environment. The Lugano Summer School places health, disease, and health systems thinking under one common framework of coherent concepts and practical implications. The focus on public health policy, economics and management combined with the diversity of students, facilitators, guest speakers and professors from all over the world, has provided for a rich learning environment for over two decades reaching the 28th edition this year. The education obtained and the networks created serve as an opportunity to reduce and prevent the gap between public health theory and practice.

The Lugano Summer School is jointly organized by SSPH+, the Institute of Economics (IdEP) at USI Lugano, and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) in Basel.

The support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is key, enabling professionals from Eastern Europe, Africa, and other emerging and transition economies to participate and share their knowledge and skills required to manage health systems and health service.

As an important innovation, this edition of the Lugano Summer School will be the 1st ever to offer 3 courses dedicated to social marketing. In addition to the existing curriculum of public health courses, the European Social Marketing Association (ESMA) will lead one 6-day course and two 3-day courses designed for practitioners, researchers, graduate students, and policy influencers.

These courses are open to all students, regardless of their level of familiarity with social marketing.

23rd May 2019: Course “Introduction to Health Care Epidemiology”

This new course is on offer in the spring term 2019 by the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute (EBPI) - University of Zurich, on Thursday, 23rd May from 9 am to 12 am.

It aims at giving a broad introduction into the topic of health care provision (see link below).

The target group are students with a Master or PhD with interests in the area of health care provision, health systems or epidemiology.

Pre knowledge: Interest in research related to the evaluation of health care systems, health services research or health care epidemiology. Basic knowledge of statistical software (e.g. R. Stata, SPSS).

29th - 30th November 2018: Symposium and Short course on the role of rapid reviews and policy briefs

How to improve the use of evidence-based health (care) information in practice and policy? The role of rapid reviews and policy briefs, and their synergistic effects:

SSSPH+ funded one-day Symposium and optional one-day Short course on the role of rapid reviews and policy briefs in evidence-informed decision-making in public health policy and practice. Event organised jointly by the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine and Cochrane Switzerland, University of Lausanne - (lead institution) and the University of Lucerne (co-lead), partner institutions of the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS).

Day 1 (29 November 2018):

One-day Symposium on how to obtain high-quality evidence on specific health(care) issues in a timely and suitable manner. Policy briefs and rapid reviews (RR) offer effective ways of summarizing and communicating current research evidence to policy and practice.

Day 2 (30 November 2018):

One-day Short course on rapid reviews with more in-depth discussion of methods, by the Cochrane Rapid Reviews Methods Group.

Target audience: Stakeholders from various backgrounds and work settings interested in better understanding the values and concepts behind rapid reviews and policy briefs in evidence-informed decision-making.

7th - 8th November 2018: Swiss Public Health Conference

The theme of the Swiss Public Health Conference 2018 was "Social Science for Public Health".

The conference took place on November 7 & 8, 2018 at the University of Neuchâtel.

Our health, both as individuals and members of the society, depends on several factors, including our genetic heritage and behaviour, the environmental conditions we live in, as well as our access to quality healthcare. Even though the latter contributes only 15 to 20 percent to our health conditions, the health costs almost entirely flow to this sector, as our healthcare system is essentially oriented to providing medical care for unhealthy people. The associated steady increase in health insurance premiums is one of the biggest sources of concern for the Swiss population, especially for families, and therefore dominates the public debate on health policies.

Social sciences help us understand individual and collective health beyond the biomedical framework. They help us understand how the social environment, concrete living conditions and behaviour influence our health. From this, public health options can be developed that can complement our health care system.

What can social sciences contribute to promoting health enhancing policies? What are the opportunities and challenges of such an approach? How do we translate recommendations into practice? These were the central questions of the Swiss Public Health Conference 2018.

25th - 26th October 2018: Conference "Countering Staff Shortage Among Health Professions"

This conference was part of the national project «Strategie gegen den Fachkräftemangel in den Gesundheitsberufen». It focussed on clinically relevant, praxis-orientated, and interprofessional scientific knowledge, regarding measures aimed at reducing workforce shortage among health professions.

The conference took place on October 25 & 26, 2018 in Berne.


14th September 2018: First Conference of the Swiss Society of Health Economics

The conference took place on September 14, 2018 at the University of Lucerne.

The conference aimed to bring together researchers, policy-makers and practitioners to showcase and discuss cutting-edge research and emerging ideas in health economics. The theme of the conference was «Health Economics and Health System Reforms».

13th September 2018: SGGOE International Doctoral Workshop in Health Economics and Policy

This year's doctoral workshop as part of the International Doctoral Courses in Health Economics and Policy took place on September 13, at the University of Lucerne.

The workshop intended to assist doctoral students in their research work. It provided them with the unique opportunity to present their research ideas, study methodology and/or empirical results as well as to practice their presentation skills. Early stage students and advanced students were invited to present their work. Research was discussed by peers and feedback was provided by senior experts and faculty. The workshop allowed for intensive networking between PhD students and faculty members on an international scale.

12th - 13th April 2018: Wennberg International Collaborative Spring Policy Meeting 2018

The Wennberg International Collaborative Spring Policy Meeting is hosted by the Wennberg International Collaborative, the National Research Program 74 «Smarter Health Care», and the Swiss School of Public Health. The meeting followed up on the very successful health services research symposia organized by the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences and the Gottfried und Julia Bangerter-Rhyner-Foundation between 2012 and 2017.

The meeting took place on April 12 & 13, 2018 in Zurich.

22nd & 23rd November 2017: Swiss Public Health Conference 

The focus of the Swiss Public Health Conference 2017 was in how far personalized health and public health are compatible with each other, including new options for public healthcare, access to data, and the emerging personalized health market.

The conference took place in Basel on November 22 & 23, 2017 and was organized by SSPH+, the Swiss Society for Public Health and the Swiss TPH.

16th - 17th November 2017: 1st SLHS Annual Meeting

The very first Annual Meeting of the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) was open to all official partners and scholars of the SLHS. During the two-day meeting, participants presented their current work within the SLHS and developments within the SLHS were discussed in the plenum.

The meeting took place on November 16 & 17, 2017 at the University of Lucerne.

Learning health systems are innovative mechanisms that support evidence-based solutions and policy-making in public health. In order to ensure continuous integration of available evidence, and to respond effectively to newly occurring health system challenges, learning health systems rely on cyclical dynamics that allow to identify issues, systematize relevant evidence, present potential action plans and to revise and reshape responses. 


Launched in 2017, the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS) aims at introducing the first nation-wide learning health system to respond to current needs of the health system and to ensure evidence translation into practice and policy. The SLHS is a joint project between seven academic partner institutions in Switzerland from different disciplines, including medical science, public health, law, economics, and communication. The project has three overarching aims: (1.) to bridge research, policy, and practice by means of learning cycles, (2.) to build scientific capacity in form of institutionalized training for researchers in the field of learning health systems, and (3.) to establish national standards for structured reporting and collection of new multipurpose health information. Whereas the first objective is considered to be at the very core of the project, the two latter ones are considered to be supporting mechanisms. 


Based on an iterative prioritization process, topics that are relevant to ongoing needs of the Swiss health system will be identified. Each partner institution will work on one of the identified issues with the goal to establish learning cycles that aim at translating evidence into practice and practice back into evidence. 

One of the core features of the SLHS will be regular stakeholder dialogues. Based on available evidence, in form of policy briefs, stakeholders from academia, policy and practice will discuss and evaluate in structured dialogues the best course of action. Implementation efforts will be evaluated on a regular basis to inform the continuous learning cycle and to support learning within the system.


The SLHS is an important mechanism to institutionalize learning cycles within the Swiss health system and to systematically integrate evidence into practice and policy-making. Further, it will promote synergies and collaboration between different stakeholders in the field of public health.
